Clemson weekend scene

Weekend itinerary

Two Nights in Clemson: Campus, Garden, and Lake

Walk College Avenue Friday, tour Clemson University and the Botanical Garden Saturday, then finish Sunday at Abernathy Waterfront Park.

By Cal Mercer — a Second Star Guide itinerary

A first Clemson weekend links College Avenue and campus on foot, gives the Botanical Garden Saturday afternoon, and finishes with Abernathy Waterfront Park Sunday.

Best length

2 nights

Two nights cover downtown, campus, the Botanical Garden, and one Lake Hartwell stop. A football game replaces most of Saturday rather than becoming an extra stop.

Stay

The Abernathy of Clemson

A 41-room hotel one block from Memorial Stadium, with spacious rooms and an in-house bar and cafe; the strongest…

Main activity

Clemson University campus

Central campus and College Avenue form the walkable core; the Botanical Garden and Lake Hartwell parks are deliberate drives from that core.

Pace

Downtown, campus, garden, and lake

Friday stays downtown, Saturday combines campus with the Botanical Garden, and Sunday ends with an hour at Abernathy Waterfront Park before departure.

College Avenue in downtown Clemson in the evening
Friday stays compact between downtown Clemson, College Avenue, and the campus edge.
Path through the South Carolina Botanical Garden
The free 230-acre Botanical Garden deserves at least 90 minutes rather than a quick pass after campus.
Lake Hartwell shoreline path and picnic area near Clemson
Use Abernathy Waterfront Park for a short walk or Twelve Mile Recreation Area for a longer lake stop.

Friday

Friday: check in and walk College Avenue.

Eat downtown, browse the campus-edge shops, and learn the short walk between College Avenue and the university before Saturday appointments or crowds.

Saturday

Saturday: Clemson University and the Botanical Garden.

Allow two to three hours for a campus tour or self-guided loop, eat nearby, then give the free Botanical Garden at least 90 minutes. On a home-game weekend, football replaces this sequence.

4:30 PM

Afternoon

Use late afternoon for downtown or a short Hartwell walk.

Return to College Avenue for shops and coffee, or walk Abernathy Waterfront Park if there is an hour of daylight. Save Twelve Mile Recreation Area for a longer water plan.

Sunday

Sunday: walk Abernathy Waterfront Park.

Check out, eat, and spend an hour on Abernathy Waterfront Park's shoreline boardwalk before leaving Clemson. Use Twelve Mile instead only for a longer picnic, seasonal swim, or boat-access plan.
