Weekend itinerary

Two Nights in Clemson: Campus, Garden, and Lake

Explore College Avenue, Clemson University and the Botanical Garden, with time for a Lake Hartwell shoreline walk.

By Cal Mercer — a Second Star Guide itinerary

Campus walks, garden trails and a Lake Hartwell shoreline stop fill a Clemson weekend.

Best length

2 nights

Two nights cover downtown, campus, the Botanical Garden, and one Lake Hartwell stop. A football game replaces most of Saturday rather than becoming an extra stop.

Stay

The Abernathy of Clemson

Downtown favors College Avenue and campus walks; The Abernathy favors Memorial Stadium; the Madren Center side favors conferences, golf, and Lake Hartwell.

Main activity

Clemson University campus

Central campus and College Avenue form the walkable core; the Botanical Garden and Lake Hartwell parks are deliberate drives from that core.

Pace

Downtown, campus, garden, and lake

Friday pairs College Avenue with dinner on Tiger Boulevard; Saturday combines campus and the Botanical Garden, with a lake stop Saturday or Sunday.

College Avenue in downtown Clemson in the evening
Friday stays compact between downtown Clemson, College Avenue, and the campus edge.
Path through the South Carolina Botanical Garden
The free 230-acre Botanical Garden deserves at least 90 minutes rather than a quick pass after campus.
Lake Hartwell shoreline path and picnic area near Clemson
Abernathy offers a short walk; Twelve Mile suits a longer lake visit. Twelve Mile closes February–March; swimming is April–October.

Friday

Friday: check in and walk College Avenue.

Browse College Avenue and the campus-edge shops, then drive or arrange a ride to Red Bowl on Tiger Boulevard for dinner.

Saturday

Saturday: Clemson University and the Botanical Garden.

Allow time for a preregistered campus tour if offered on your Saturday, or take a self-guided loop; then eat nearby and give the Botanical Garden at least 90 minutes. On a home-game weekend, football replaces this sequence.

10:00 AM

Main activity

Tour campus, then spend the afternoon in the Botanical Garden.

If a guided campus tour is available and preregistered for your Saturday, join it at its scheduled time; otherwise take a self-guided campus walk. After lunch on College Avenue, drive to the Botanical Garden for display gardens and trails.

4:30 PM

Afternoon

Use late afternoon for downtown or a short Hartwell walk.

Return to College Avenue for shops and coffee. Alternatively, walk Abernathy Waterfront Park in daylight instead of visiting it Sunday.

Sunday

Sunday: walk Abernathy Waterfront Park.

After breakfast and checkout, visit Abernathy Waterfront Park unless you walked it Saturday. For a longer outing, substitute Twelve Mile; it closes February–March and swimming is April–October.

9:00 AM

Sunday morning

Breakfast and checkout.

Enjoy breakfast or coffee near your hotel, then check out before heading to the lake.
